{"id":152,"date":"2016-04-10T20:43:43","date_gmt":"2016-04-11T04:43:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nathanbak.com\/?p=152"},"modified":"2026-01-02T20:02:38","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T04:02:38","slug":"bakboard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/?p=152","title":{"rendered":"BakBoard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-155 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Screenshot-from-2016-04-10-20-11-30-1024x640.png\" alt=\"BakBoard\" width=\"840\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Screenshot-from-2016-04-10-20-11-30-1024x640.png 1024w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Screenshot-from-2016-04-10-20-11-30-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Screenshot-from-2016-04-10-20-11-30-768x480.png 768w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Screenshot-from-2016-04-10-20-11-30-1200x750.png 1200w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Screenshot-from-2016-04-10-20-11-30.png 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A couple months ago I had the idea that it would be nice to have a display in the kitchen to help the family be organized and coordinated.\u00a0 I wanted it to have a clock, school schedule information, calendar information, and a family Fitbit leaderboard and to power it with my Raspberry Pi.<\/p>\n<p>While searching around I came across <a href=\"http:\/\/dakboard.com\">DakBoard<\/a> which seemed close to what I wanted.\u00a0 It provides date\/time information and displays calendar events.\u00a0 Additionally it can display weather information, but the really brilliant piece it has that I was missing from my idea was to display pictures.\u00a0 I immediately created an account to try it out, but unfortunately ran into some problems with the Dropbox integration and was unable to get support in the forum and my e-mails for help went unanswered&#8211;it seems not much is happening with DakBoard.\u00a0 Since the code isn&#8217;t open source and it didn&#8217;t provide for my requirements, I went about creating my own &#8220;BakBoard&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The above picture is a screen shot I took of BakBoard this evening.\u00a0 It currently has the following features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Date\/time in the top left.<\/li>\n<li>School information in the top right.\u00a0 If it is before 4:00pm, it displays the schedule for the current day and after 4:00pm it displays the schedule for the next day.\u00a0 The service that provides the school schedule information is described in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nathanbak.com\/?p=115\">this post<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Calendar information on the bottom.\u00a0 It provides five days of information: the current day and the next five days.<\/li>\n<li>Fitbit leaderboard on the right.\u00a0 Currently it just has the avatar and number of steps.<\/li>\n<li>Picture is the background for the entire board.\u00a0 The pictures come from from selected subdirectories in my DropBox folder.\u00a0 The picture changes every 10 seconds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It remains a work in progress and I&#8217;m learning a lot, but already the family enjoys having the BakBoard display in the kitchen.\u00a0 In future posts I may describe how things are implemented, what I&#8217;ve learned in the process, and new features added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A couple months ago I had the idea that it would be nice to have a display in the kitchen to help the family be organized and coordinated.\u00a0 I wanted it to have a clock, school schedule information, calendar information, and a family Fitbit leaderboard and to power it with my Raspberry Pi.
