{"id":180,"date":"2016-05-03T14:20:34","date_gmt":"2016-05-03T22:20:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nathanbak.com\/?p=180"},"modified":"2026-01-02T20:02:38","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T04:02:38","slug":"whats-a-triby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/?p=180","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s a Triby?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-181 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/tribbles-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"tribbles\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/tribbles-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/tribbles.jpg 384w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>When I saw the word &#8220;Triby&#8221;, my mind jumped to a classic Star Trek episode and I imaged Captain Kirk and a bunch of fuzzy things.\u00a0 A quick search revealed that those are &#8220;Tribbles&#8221; and that the Triby is very different, but the similarity in name grabbed my attention enough that I put forth to answer the question, &#8220;What&#8217;s a Triby?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last month I commented (perhaps bemoaned?) that all the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nathanbak.com\/?p=142\">fancy gadgets aren&#8217;t very family friendly<\/a>.\u00a0 Apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.invoxia.com\/triby\/\">Triby<\/a> is a new product which is all about &#8220;Connecting you with the music and people you love&#8221;.\u00a0 I find it interesting that music is listed before people, but it does seem to be a step in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p>The core of Triby is the Alexa Voice Service.\u00a0 This means that it is a lot like the Alexa on the Amazon Echo.\u00a0 However, it doesn&#8217;t seem to support everything Alexa has to offer such as some music services (Spotify and Pandora) and home automation solutions (WeMo and Phillips Hue).\u00a0 Even without those, the core Alexa functionality and numerous skills available (such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nathanbak.com\/?p=167\">Nanny State<\/a>) provide many features useful to a family.<\/p>\n<p>There is also some &#8220;internet calling&#8221; capability in Triby.\u00a0 This allows for hands-free calling.\u00a0 It appears as though it is configured so that calls can only be made to\/from specified contacts&#8211;this suggests that a kid could easily call Grandma but there wouldn&#8217;t be concern of telemarketers calling.<\/p>\n<p>Triby goes beyond voice communication with a small display and a few buttons.\u00a0 By default, the screen appears to have a clock, the day\/date, weather information.\u00a0 Some pictures show the Triby displaying information about what music is playing, or displaying virtual sticky notes sent from the phone app.\u00a0 The buttons are shortcuts to call people or play specific stations and do other tasks like answer a call (but presumably those things can be done with voice as well).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-185 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/triby-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"triby\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/triby-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/triby-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/triby.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>To me the Triby looks like a toy radio for children.\u00a0 It has a magnet on the back so that it can be attached to a fridge.\u00a0 The buttons are also have a toy-ish appearance.\u00a0 The screen is a small e-ink display&#8211;probably to reduce power consumption (the battery lasts about two days on a charge).\u00a0 The neatest physical aspect of the Triby is the mechanical flag that pops out of the side when a new message is received.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d love to have a chance to play with a Triby, but I don&#8217;t see myself forking at $200 for one (or even the current $169 sale price on Amazon).\u00a0 I think Triby has good intentions, but I&#8217;m not seeing a WOW!
