{"id":449,"date":"2018-02-13T19:53:10","date_gmt":"2018-02-14T03:53:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nathanbak.com\/?p=449"},"modified":"2026-01-02T20:05:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T04:05:20","slug":"the-historical-settings-of-yoshikawa-eiji","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/?p=449","title":{"rendered":"My Accidental Introduction to Yoshikawa Eiji"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-448\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/2018-01-08-13.17.01-e1515447763955-1024x364.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/2018-01-08-13.17.01-e1515447763955-1024x364.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/2018-01-08-13.17.01-e1515447763955-300x107.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/2018-01-08-13.17.01-e1515447763955-768x273.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/2018-01-08-13.17.01-e1515447763955-1200x427.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I really enjoy the writings of Yoshikawa Eiji.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve already written far too much about Yoshikawa and his writings in my thesis <a href=\"http:\/\/libraries.colorado.edu\/record=b3532695~S3\"><em>Yoshikawa Eiji&#8217;s Three kingdoms as Japanese literature<\/em><\/a>, but in that sort of academic paper there isn&#8217;t much opportunity to mention my personal experiences with his writings.<\/p>\n<p>I encountered Yoshikawa by accident.\u00a0 I was at a Barnes and Noble bookstore looking for a Yoshimoto Banana book (a very different author) when I saw a paperback of <em>Musashi<\/em> (actually, as I later learned, only the first part of the story) and bought it based only on the information on the cover.\u00a0 I often find myself reading multiple books during the same stretch of time, and I remember while reading <em>Musashi<\/em> I was also reading <em>Foucault&#8217;s Pendulum<\/em> so the two books will always be strangely linked in my brain despite having little in common.\u00a0 I was sad when I reached the end of my incomplete <em>Musashi<\/em> and so I soon invested in a volume containing the complete text.\u00a0 Since then, I&#8217;ve spent many hours reading various writings by and about Yoshikawa Eiji in both English and Japanese.<\/p>\n<p>When I read the literary works of Yoshikawa Eiji, I enter a vivid world with rich characters.\u00a0 Unlike many books where the protagonist is a generic &#8220;everyman&#8221; or &#8220;everywoman&#8221; (although typically with a bit of spunk) which take place in the &#8220;here and now&#8221; or thereabouts, Yoshikawa&#8217;s books take place during specific times and places in history centered around actual historical people.\u00a0 Of course there is a lot of fiction filling in the details.\u00a0 In the past I have said that if a person is going to read only one book of Japanese literature, it should be Endo&#8217;s <em>Silence<\/em>.\u00a0 However, typically when I am recommending a book to introduce someone to Japanese literature, I will suggest Yoshikawa&#8217;s <em>Musashi<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I really enjoy the writings of Yoshikawa Eiji.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve already written far too much about Yoshikawa and his writings in my thesis Yoshikawa Eiji&#8217;s Three kingdoms as Japanese literature, but in that sort of academic paper there isn&#8217;t much opportunity to mention my personal experiences with his writings.
