{"id":488,"date":"2018-10-25T15:58:39","date_gmt":"2018-10-25T23:58:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nathanbak.com\/?p=488"},"modified":"2026-01-02T20:05:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T04:05:20","slug":"my-stand-up-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/?p=488","title":{"rendered":"My Stand-Up Family"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_496\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-496\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-496\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/2018-10-25-16.42.52-e1540511566344-1024x573.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/2018-10-25-16.42.52-e1540511566344-1024x573.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/2018-10-25-16.42.52-e1540511566344-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/2018-10-25-16.42.52-e1540511566344-768x430.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/2018-10-25-16.42.52-e1540511566344-1200x671.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-496\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Artistic rendition of family stand-up meeting<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Every morning at work, I participate in a team <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stand-up_meeting\">stand-up meeting<\/a>.\u00a0 During this fifteen minute meeting, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kanban_board\">kanban<\/a> is displayed and each team member briefly answers these three questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What did I do yesterday (towards sprint goal)?<\/li>\n<li>What am I doing today (towards sprint goal)?<\/li>\n<li>What is blocking me (from sprint goal)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t take very long for as many as 20 people to report and we are usually done early.\u00a0 If someone is blocked, a subset of people may remain afterward in order to figure out how to remove the block.\u00a0 But this post isn&#8217;t about stand-ups in the tech world rather how my family is also having a daily stand-up.<\/p>\n<p>For many years my family has had a bedtime routine.\u00a0 It has evolved over the years as the children have aged, and a few weeks ago we added a stand-up where everyone reports:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What did I do today?<\/li>\n<li>What am I doing tomorrow?<\/li>\n<li>What is blocking me?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It has taken some time to get the scope correct.\u00a0 For example, breakfast menu typically doesn&#8217;t need to be reported and being tired is not a blocking issue.\u00a0 Now we are more likely to hear about accomplishments such as a song being passed off at a music lesson or blocking issues such as a child needing to be somewhere and lacking transport.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve seen benefits from having the family stand-up every evening:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More accurate calendaring&#8211;we have a shared family calendar that displays on the BakBoard and is available on our various electronic devices, but sometimes activities and appointments aren&#8217;t added to the calendar.\u00a0 When someone mentions something for the next day that isn&#8217;t on the calendar, we get it added.<\/li>\n<li>Everyone is better informed&#8211;there usually isn&#8217;t anything that is new to everyone, but often there is something that is new to someone.\u00a0 We now have fewer situations where a subset of the family is ill-informed as to what is happening.<\/li>\n<li>Offers to help&#8211;when someone reports being blocked, other family members often immediately volunteer to help resolve the issue.<\/li>\n<li>Positive reinforcement&#8211;when someone reports a worthy accomplishment, the family promptly provides proper praise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even though both my work and my family stand-up meetings follow the same pattern, the implied context of the questions is different.\u00a0 While work stand-ups are focused on the sprint goals, family stand-ups deal a lot more with schedule synchronization and individual well-being.\u00a0 Also, blockages reported in a family scenario are more likely to include details of interpersonal squabbles.\u00a0 This perhaps suggests that the family stand-ups could benefit from defined goals rather than the implicit &#8220;make it through the week somehow.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I am glad that we started having daily family stand-ups&#8211;it has made some things easier.\u00a0 I expect that over time the family stand-ups will continue to evolve as we see what is most effective for our needs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every morning at work, I participate in a team stand-up meeting.\u00a0 During this fifteen minute meeting, the kanban is displayed and each team member briefly answers these three questions: What did I do yesterday (towards sprint goal)?
