{"id":83,"date":"2016-03-22T19:41:52","date_gmt":"2016-03-23T03:41:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nathanbak.com\/?p=83"},"modified":"2026-01-02T20:02:38","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T04:02:38","slug":"how-randall-munroe-ruined-most-comics-for-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/?p=83","title":{"rendered":"How Randall Munroe ruined most comics for me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several years ago I was introduced to <a href=\"http:\/\/xkcd.com\/\">xkcd<\/a> which is drawn by Randall Munroe.\u00a0 I believe it was in a comment on Slashdot that basically said &#8220;Obligatory xkcd reference: <em>link_to_some_xkcd_comic<\/em>&#8220;.\u00a0 It was amusing and I went back to &#8220;1&#8221; and worked my way forward.\u00a0 I added xkcd to my feed reader and became a regular follower of the strip.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-124\" title=\"But wait, there's more. Here's another punchline.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic1-300x131.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"457\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic1-300x131.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic1-768x336.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic1-1024x448.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic1-1200x525.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic1.jpg 1362w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 457px) 85vw, 457px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Many xkcd comics follow the same formula used by most comics in which multiple characters converse and by the end the reader has hopefully noticed something humorous.\u00a0 In the case of xkcd, the humor is often rather nerdy.\u00a0 I must confess that it was weeks or months before I discovered that every xkcd comic contains some mouseover text.\u00a0 This means that when the mouse cursor is hovering over the comic, additional text appears which can take the joke even further.\u00a0 So I had to go back and read all the comics again and remember to hover the cursor over each so I could get the whole xkcd experience.\u00a0 In many cases the additional text takes a funny comic and makes it even funnier.\u00a0 In other cases it takes a comic that doesn&#8217;t seem super funny and twists it into something hilarious.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-125\" title=\"This is wet-your-pants funny.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic2-300x192.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"312\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic2-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic2-768x492.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic2.jpg 886w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 312px) 85vw, 312px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Randall Munroe also has a serial (and book) called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/what-if.xkcd.com\/\">What If<\/a>&#8221; where he publishes &#8220;Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions&#8221;.\u00a0 Along with a technical explanation and general wit, the text is interspersed with illustrations.\u00a0 These illustrations and the accompanying mouseover text not only help to convey the message, but also make the article seem less stuffy.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-126\" title=\"Adding something humory\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic3-300x181.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"332\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic3-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic3-768x463.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic3.jpg 988w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 332px) 85vw, 332px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are other intelligent, funny people besides Randall Munroe who create comics.\u00a0 I read their comics and often chuckle when I finish.\u00a0 Now, whether I&#8217;m reading on the web or in print, I always have a strong inclination to mouseover the comic and get the &#8220;rest&#8221;, but instead I&#8217;m left hanging . . .<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-127\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic4-1024x449.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"456\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic4-1024x449.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic4-300x132.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic4-768x337.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic4-1200x527.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/nathanbak.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/comic4.jpg 1504w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 456px) 85vw, 456px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several years ago I was introduced to xkcd which is drawn by Randall Munroe.\u00a0 I believe it was in a comment on Slashdot that basically said &#8220;Obligatory xkcd reference: link_to_some_xkcd_comic&#8220;.\u00a0 It was amusing and I went back to &#8220;1&#8221;
